Objective: To describe in broad terms the principles that characterise the living processes at the cellular level. Content: Introduction: Scope of cell biology. The evolution of the living cell. Diversity of cellular structures. Methods of cell isolation and study. Chemical composition of the living cell: small molecules: sugars, amino acids, lipids, nucleotides and their precursors. Macromolecules: Protein, nucleic acids and polysaccharides. Molecular organization of cells: The plasma membrane. The nucleus, other organelles, the cytoplasm. Cell growth and cell division. Cell functions, adhesion and extra-cellular matrix. Functional organization of the cell: Introduction to gene structure, expression and regulation. Introduction to enzymes and metabolic pathways. Energy conservation in mitochondria and chloroplasts. Cytogenetics: Genetic variation; cytoplasm and heredity. Germ cells and fertilization; differentiation and mechanisms of development.
